“She told you, I had something to do with the death of my own brother, Aaron?” Evan’s sexy deep voice was dry and emotionless, as he drove his Beemer down the street. They drove by the Hudson River and captured the glow of the dark sunset on the shimmering water.

“Yes,” Holly said, looking into Evan’s gorgeous blue eyes for the brief moment he glanced at her. She noticed the nice design of the ink on his neck. The tattoo design that ran along the right side of his neck and down the full length of his arm. She remembered what Brigitte said about Tre, the tattoo artiste and parlor owner.

She didn’t want to believe that after all they’d been through that she could be wrong about Evan. Caring Evan who rescued her one too many times. Even tonight, if he hadn’t mentioned about Birgitte setting up her shift, how would she have known. Holy shit! Birgitte was dangerous as hell. She could have set Holly up to be murdered. But once again, Evan had been watching her back.

How could someone so gentle and caring as Evan, have such a horrible criminal streak? She didn’t want to believe it. It couldn’t be true.

“What do you believe, Holly?”

Whatever you tell me.

“I don’t believe it.” I don’t want to believe it.

“You have doubts. I can sense it.”

Damn, he’s good. Too good. He can see right through me. He can read me like a parking ticket.

“Well, you haven’t been forthright about a lot of things, Evan. I don’t even know that much about you.”

“I told you everything you need to know.”

“But I want to know more, Evan. I want you to let me in. You keep shutting me out.” Goodness, would she listen to herself? She sounded more like his wife or therapist when all they did was start off in a phony relationship to fool her family.

But Holly had already fallen deeply for this guy and there was no other way out. And she knew deep down that he felt the same way about her. She had nine lives and Evan saved about four of them so far since she’d known him.

He’d saved her life, her body, her mind, her soul and her hope.

She needed to be with him.

“She told me you’re a thrill seeker. An adrenaline junkie. You can’t stay still for a moment. You like to live dangerously.”

“You believe that?”

“Why else would a guy with so much money and influence decide to be a cop? Is sitting in a boardroom all day or pushing pencils too boring?”

“You’re a real wise-ass, you know that?”

She grinned. At least she got him humoring her, again. His lips curved slightly into a grin.
